DUST ISSUE #15

Known for his youthful style, photographer and director Brett Lloyd lives and works in London.

PERSONAL WORK

Brett Lloyd initially gained attention for his intimate documentation of urban youth subcultures.
In an early series, “The quieter poster boys” , he photographed guys he met whilst travelling in Europe, accompanying text with the images, describing his encounters.

Brett’s work is punctuated by recognisable faces. Often bony, always beautiful, his ever-rotating roster of limber-limbed, perma-young boys and girls defines his images as much as his often stark (but never cold) aesthetic.

The ‘Seldom Seen’ project is a visual conversation between Brett LLoyd and photographer Felix Werbowy. “Because I come from fashion photography I was drawn to creating narrative, an emotion  without necessarily using humans, face etc…

Brett’s first book ‘Scugnizzi ‘ was published by Dashwood books in 2014. Scugnizzi is a term used to describe the local kids who in the summer overrun the town beaches of Naples. The book features vignettes of daily drama on the beach that seem to channel neorealist Italian cinema of the 1940’s.

‘RESISTE,’ PARCOURS SAINT-GERMAIN EXHIBITION

Sonia Sieff, photographer and director, has a singular taste for art and a sense of beauty rare to find.
Born in Paris, her playground was the studio of her father, Jean Loup Sieff, the admired photographer and friend of other creative talents such as Avedon, Newton or Ritts.

Photography was no mystery to her, it ran in her blood, leading her to explore her own creative path through multiple experiences: film set photographer at the age of 20, then a portraitist, she finally turned her attention to fashion photography.

Sonia chose fashion photography because she likes working in a team and being involved in  production. “Fashion is a combination of many aspects… the control over the portrait, the lights, the colors, the clothes and the encounter of all such elements makes  a good fashion picture”

“To listen to yourself and never follow someone else’s point of view.“  Sonia Sieff casts the silhouette of a biker, fearless and free like those women reporters of the 1970s. With a high degree of duality, she is able to switch spontaneously between masculinity at work and femininity in representation.

Sonia’s style is empowered by her love of light as well as an obsession with body and personality.
She loves women who make fashion their own.”I don’t like clotheshanger girls, but those that stand out, that use clothes and play with them to create a personal style.”

‘Les Françaises’ is her first book.
Focused on her fascination with the female form, Sonia presents a collection of nudes ranging from alluring actresses to It girls.

With Paris and its interiors as a frequent backdrop, Sonia captures the beauty and distinct personality of each while also depicting a unique sense of place.

The latest book, ‘Oran’, brings together Sonia’s photographies and Laurence Benaïm’s prose in Yves Saint-Laurent’s native land.
Ten years after the couturier’s death, this duo returns on pilgrimage and reveals the different facets of the city, far from exotism and orientalism.
